Introduction:
These words are my personal pathway to freedom. They tell of my story. It is not a historical,
political or academic pursuit. It encapsulates my memories and experiences of life in a black
world through blue eyes.
My blue eyes take on a duality in this world. My eyes, as a white woman in America, of European decent, have given me privilege that I have been viscerally aware of the majority of life, even before I understood the details of this privilege.
But residing in what you cannot see, the heart and mind,
I have lived a life overcome by the blueness of brokenness in a world divided by the idea of “others”.
They say the eyes are the windows into the Soul. Black Through Blue Eyes is a love letter to those lives devastated by the realities of racism, break up letter to some and wake up letter to all. I seek healing in this long journey and exploration through the tragedy of racism – for us all, even the most unassuming who would not expect its grasp has reached them.
These pages are filled with the center of my heart; from the life experiences as a child who was born aware and resisted assimilation to a racist mind-frame and eventual became the wife of a black man, the mother of two bi-racial daughters and first-hand witness to the realities of racisms present day and cumulative effects on countless loved ones I call both family, friend
and stranger. Its reality unveiling itself early in my life,
I have not lived a life on the safety sidelines of white superiority. I was born its rebellious daughter who refused her seat on the throne, the ultimate traitor of the white world.
I have been in the game of awakened-ness since my childhood. I have no explanations as tohow or why. I also take no credit for it. By all accounts I should be one of the countless whites who gloss over racism in this country, overlooking the overt. All of the ingredients were there.
